closing the door

because the house was here, forever
somebody said they’d built it
thoroughly thought it out
chosen its shape and made sense of its parts

oh
how they’d love to show us
a user’s manual, of sorts
but they can’t

because the house was here, before them
waiting for anyone to live in
to insufflate their lives upon
lending it meaning / purpose for a while

yes
how we’d love to do so
a true romance, of sorts
but we can’t

because the house was here, and will be
should we decide to leave it
closing the door behind us
as those who build their own house can
